As for the issue you raise about restitution of cultural artifacts to their countries of origin, well, that is a really controversial matter indeed! Just imagine for a moment that, all of a sudden, all historical items in museums all over the world should be handed over to their countries of origin. I imagine that many of those artifacts do still exist (and are available for public view and study) thanks to the fact that, at one point in history, someone took them along to her country. What would have happened to Rosetta stone were it not for the French who found it and the British who took it to London? How about the Pergamon altar, if Germans did not take the pains to transport it, piece by piece, to Berlin? And the Elgin marbles you mention? Would have they survived to this day if Mr. Elgin did not pick them? Perhaps history of humankind is just what it is. None of the items I mention were “stolen” as a result of a war looting. None was involved in any bloodshed. They were just discovered in archaeological excavations, or taken from the ruins they formed part of, at a time in which local populations did not give them any relevance. At that time, present day national pride regarding those artifacts was quite out of sight. I do not know. I am open to others’ opinions on this, but I am tired of so much political correctness…
